Why We Love Our Underwear And Want You Too As Well

Your Underwear Can Have A Huge Impact On The Planet

From an environmental perspective, we need to start talking about the impact of the textile industry on this beautiful planet we all call home.

The textile and apparel industry is a $3 trillion global industry, it accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions and remains the second largest industrial polluter in the world, second to oil.... All enough stats to make me stop in my tracks and scream out what can I do to help change this number and quickly.

A quarter of the toxic chemicals produced in the world are used in textiles and it is an industry that is the second biggest polluter of freshwater resources on the planet. On top of that gasses like Nitrous Oxide is emitted which is 300 times more damaging than carbon dioxide so temperatures continue to rise and our oceans become more acidic... All enough reasons for me to say please tell me the options and how can I stop this from becoming even worse than it already is.

Around 70 million barrels of oil are used each year to make polyester, which is now the most commonly used fibre in our clothing and underwear but it takes more than 200 years to decompose. And over 70 million trees are logged every year and turned into fabrics like bamboo, rayon, viscose, modal and lyocell... All enough reasons for me to say to myself what are the options right now that work gently with the earth not against her?

These are the current shocking truths of the textile and apparel industry. If we want to see better days for the earth and our children and grand children my advice to myself and everyone I know, keep it simple with small simple steps of questions and change.

One simple act of change lies in your undies.

We all wear underwear 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are 7.7 billion humans on the planet right now. And around 25 million of us in Australia.

If every single one of us could change even just that one choice of underwear to an alternative that is comfortable, soft, anti microbial, gentle on the earth and on our skin, underwear that breathes, made with no toxic dyes, made with no toxic chemicals spilling off into waterways and leeching in the soils making the soil sick, as well as not engaging in child labour and unfair working conditions ... What an impact the humble underwear can make.

Let's look at the impact statistics:

Just ONE pair of Bhumi Organic Cotton underwear:
  • 41 days of clean drinking water SAVED
  • 3.8 kilometres of driving emissions AVOIDED
  • 365 hours of LED bulb energy SAVED
  • ZERO child labour
  • ZERO unfair working conditions
  • ZERO toxic dyes
  • ZERO pesticides
  • 100% Love for the Earth or Her people

If in Australia we ALL made the switch to just ONE pair of Bhumi Organic Cotton underwear in JUST ONE DAY that will be:
  • 1025000000 days of clean drinking water SAVED
  • 95000000 kilometres of driving emissions AVOIDED
  • 9125000000 hours of LED bulb energy SAVED
  • ZERO child labour
  • ZERO unfair working conditions
  • ZERO toxic dyes
  • ZERO pesticides
  • 100% Love for the Earth or Her people

Imagine for a week, a year, a decade... WOW!!!!!!

For me? The switch is an easy one. I feel good when I wear my undies. I feel and I know I am making a big difference in something that is so simple and I wear every single day.

All Bhumi underwear products are made from Fairtrade Cotton and adhere to the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and dyed using water based GOTS approved dyes, which are free from AZO dyes, toxic chlorine bleach, toxic heavy metals, toxic formaldehyde, toxic aromatic solvents with no toxic colour fasteners to artificially lock in the colour with chemicals.

Our organic cotton underwear breathes, keeps things cool and allows air flow in the nether regions where moisture and heat are known recipes for bacteria growth. Our organic cotton underwear is ever so soft and grown just like mother nature intended with no chemicals, synthetic fertilisers and toxic dyes.

Our organic cotton is grown in areas where it is optimal to grow using nature without the use of excess water irrigation or toxic fertilisers so we don't need to mark the process up nor do we need a middleman - we go straight to you!

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step - a small shift in the underwear you wear is better for your health, the planet and her people.

Our choices bring change; change for the better. And collectively if we all did just this, the impact would be monumental.
