Meaning Of Bhumi

What does Bhumi mean?

Bhumi means ‘Mother Earth’ in Sanskrit. Protecting and giving back to the world we live in is an integral part of Bhumi, therefore we chose Bhumi as the name of our company.

Our mission is to be the home for sustainable bedding and clothing that reflect the natural beauty around us and provides the building blocks for greening your life and home.

At Bhumi, everything we offer is designed to comfort, nurture, revive and sustain - to help you turn your home into a blissful sanctuary. All of our products are designed with respect for the Earth and sustainable design and manufacturing practices.

From where does Bhumi source organic cotton? And why?

Currently, Bhumi sources all of its organic cotton from India. India, along with Turkey, is among the largest organic cotton producers in the world. For our required quality, volume and scale, we have chosen India as the destination to import organic cotton. India has one of the longest and respected textile traditions in the world, which means it provides us access to some of the highest quality production facilities in the world that comply with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Soil Association requirements.

Are all Bhumi products vegan?

Yes - all our products are 100% vegan. We do not use or support the use of any animal products from "harvest to shelf". We believe in compassion to all sentient beings.

Benefits of Organic Cotton

What is organic cotton?

Organic cotton is produced without the use of harmful chemicals, insecticides and pesticides. It does not use genetically modified seeds, nor does it use any toxic dyes, bleaches or finishes. Overall, this results in organic cotton having a low environmental impact and is also soft, gentle and more durable than standard cotton.

To put the environmental impact in a little bit of perspective, regular cotton accounts for roughly up to 25% of global insecticide releases, out of which a lot is classified hazardous by the World Health Organisation - organic cotton uses no hazardous insecticides or pesticides.

What are the benefits of certified organic cotton for the planet?

Following are the 5 key benefits of certified organic cotton production for the planet

  1. Give control to farmers, not GM companies - Organic farmers don't have their choices controlled by GM companies

  1. Eliminate hazardous synthetic pesticides - Organic cotton doesn't use dangerous pesticides, protecting farmers' lives and the environment

  1. Help farmers feed their families - Organic cotton enables farmers to grow other crops for food and income

  1. Save precious water - Organic cotton uses less water, preserving a scarce and precious resource for the future

  1. Combat climate change - Organic cotton farming uses less energy and healthy organic soils store

more carbon

Why does Bhumi support Fairtrade cotton?

Fairtrade ensures a respect for the social, economic and labour rights of farmers and workers along the entire supply chain. It encourages sustainable farming practices, protects the environment and improves the quality of health and well being for farmers and workers.

Fairtrade enables the funding of community projects - the building of schools, health clinics, the building of wells for access to clean water, and education and training in business and agriculture.

By supporting fairtrade practices, Bhumi ensures a respect for the social and economic rights of the entire supply chain, including the farmers that are behind each product.

What does Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) mean?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres worldwide. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire supply chain of organic textiles and requires compliance with social criteria as well. Independent third party certification is required for the whole supply chain. It enables legitimate ‘organic’ claims to be made on final products.

The International Working Group on Global Organic Textile Standard is comprised of four reputed member organisations, namely OTA (USA), IVN (Germany), Soil Association (UK) and JOCA (Japan), which contribute to the GOTS, together with further international stakeholder organisations and experts, their respective expertise in organic farming and environmentally and socially responsible textile processing.

Does Bhumi supply fabric swatches/samples?

Unfortunately Bhumi is currently unable to a supply swatch/sample booklet of our range of colours/fabrics. We also are not able to supply a tiny sample of fabric as our products are produced outside of Australia, so we currently do not have access to the material in its raw form (only as a product).

However if you do order, once it arrives you feel the colour/fabric is not as you had hoped, feel free to contact us straight away and we can assist with a return of the item (within 30 days of its arrival in its original condition) for an exchange for another style/colour/fabric or store credit or refund.

Dyes We Use

What type of dyes are used in all Bhumi products?

All the dyes we use are low impact fibre reactive in an environmentally sensitive facility. We don’t use any chrome (or fasteners) in the process. All our prints and fabrics are dyed using water based dyes (inks), which is free of ammonia, chlorine bleach and toxic heavy metals. Adhering to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) during the manufacturing process ensures sustainable use and treatment of water used in the dyeing process. Also, all our products, including the dyes are formaldehyde free and are finished in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).

Will the colour on screen match exactly how it will look in person?

We’ve worked really hard to make sure that the colours of the products you are viewing match what you receive. However as you can understand variations may occur depending on an individual's device and brightness of screen.

However if your order arrives and you feel the colour/fabric is not quite as you had hoped, feel free to contact us straight away and we can assist with a return of the item (within 30 days of its arrival in its original condition) for an exchange for another style/colour/fabric or store credit (or refund on non sale items).

The Myth Behind Thread Count

What is thread count? Should it affect my buying decision?

Thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in 1 square inch of woven cotton. Contrary to popular belief, higher thread count doesn’t necessarily translate into higher quality – the quality of the product depends directly on the weaving process and the quality of the yarn used.

Apart from the marketing 'gimmicks' (creative counting or double counting of threads), this concept may sometimes be confusing for consumers - the analogy we like to use to illustrate this point is of healthy vs. unhealthy hair. 50 strands of unhealthy hair or 100 strands of unhealthy hair is still considered unhealthy hair. More strands of unhealthy hair do not improve the underlying hair quality. The same is true for cotton and thread count.

Simply put -

  1. We don’t recommend paying more dollars just for higher thread count

and

  2. Make sure you are not falling into the marketing 'gimmicks' of thread count

Wash Care

How do I protect my Bhumi products?

All Bhumi products are easy to care for - machine washable. We recommend washing colours separately using cold/warm water and line dry. The use of bleaching agents may damage the colours, so we don’t recommend using any bleaching agents.

Do I need to wash my Bhumi products before use?

Feel free to use all Bhumi products straight away. As we use no chemicals, you do not need to wash before use.

However with our Linen Bedding, to assist with the settling in process we recommend you put them through a cold wash first.
