Transform Your Bedroom Into A Sleep Sanctuary

Transform Your Bedroom Into A Sleep Sanctuary

When you cross the threshold from the outside world into your home, you enter your sanctuary of wellness and comfort in an environment free from chemicals and toxins. Your home is your personal sanctuary. A place for rest, reflection and peace. The spaces you create in your bedroom will help soothe and re-energise you and create focus, serenity and clarity. Your creative energy in making small or big changes to your spaces will help lay a foundation of your deepest values, dreams and aspirations.

Your bedroom is your retreat away from the world - your sleep sanctuary, your safe place to unwind, hide, fall apart, regroup, recharge, renew, regain yourself. Your bedroom should calm you, inspire you, restore you, value you - a place for love, healing and relaxation. There is a hidden beauty, a hidden secret, a hidden light, a hidden meaning in the simple moments of unwinding. When you allow yourself to unravel you feel these moments that lie in the depths of your heart bubble to the surface. It is in the silence that you can hear, it is allowing the human heart to be exposed, it is the raw awakening of your innermost thoughts and feelings. And this is beautiful. Haunting, but beautiful. Daunting but beautiful. Painful but beautiful. Allowing yourself to see your own shadows dance, you become the artist of the masterpiece of your life painting with colours of your soul.

"It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying; it allows us to clear our minds, focus, and find creative solutions to problems." - Thich Nhat Hanh

Creating peacefulness in the bedroom means more than simply the absence of sound. Peacefulness is the absence of noise, and noise comes in many forms like visual clutter and lights. In your den, use soft lighting, surround yourself with nature inspired earthy colour tones to ground you, make a corner for reading or meditation, listen to soft music that soothes your soul, infuse your space with subtle scents and ensure it is a sleep only clutter free zone.

Every night you should aim for 6-8 beautiful hours of sleep in your sacred sanctuary of restoration. In a week that is 56 hours and in a year that is around 3,000 hours of sleep. The benefits of a good night's sleep are improved memory, stress reduction, reduced inflammation and longevity. But do you really know what you're sleeping with in all this time? Do you know what chemicals you surround yourself with in your sheets for all of these hours that may be adversely affecting your health? Is your bedroom really a sacred space free from chemicals and toxic dyes? It should be.

“You know that place between sleep and awake, that place where you still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always love you. That’s where I’ll be waiting.” - J.M Barrie (Peter Pan)

Create the ultimate cocoon for sleeping with your sheets and blankets that are free from chemicals and toxic dyes. Pesticides, fertilisers, silicone waxes, harsh petroleum scours, softeners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, fasteners, ammonia, dyes, colourants, finishers, caustic soda, sulphuric acid, bromines, urea resins, halogens and formaldehyde— to name just a few are toxic substances in our sheets that make their way into the body, the bloodstream and lymphatic systems while we sleep. We breathe in the toxic cocktail in to our skin and bloodstream when we sleep forcing our immune systems to fight an uphill battle. Did you know that our skin is most porous and absorbent when the skin is warm (like when we are cosy in bed)? Did you know it only takes seconds for chemicals to start entering into the blood stream?

It is so important to ask questions, read labels and become empowered and educated about what you put on your body. Just like you feed your body with nourishing food you also need to feed and surround your skin with products that will heal, nurture and protect your largest organ. Watch out for words like: NATURAL, PURE COTTON, PURE, even ORGANIC as these terms are loosely used. Ask questions.. Find out the process something has to go through to get to the end stage textile for you to sleep in so that you can create your toxic free sleep sanctuary knowing with absolute certainty there are no toxic chemicals, finishers or dyes used.

Make the first things that you see in the morning or the last things you see at night remind you of the things that you love and are passionate about. And last of all be present in your bedroom sleep sanctuary. Embrace the simplicity. Reflect on the serenity. Breathe in the peace. Feel the connection with nature. Surrender to the silence of your oasis.

" A place of solitude offers a retreat from the opposing forces and diverse demands of living, an entry into a state of peace and unity. Mind and body can retire from confusion and conflict to a sanctuary of clarity and harmony." - Anthony Lawlor
