10 Small Lifestyle Changes To Consider This Earth Day

A Little Goes A Long Way | Earth Day - 22nd April 2020

This year marks the 50th Anniversary for celebrating the global movement 'Earth Day'. Although activities will now be focused digitally, the fervour for taking care of our beautiful planet could not be felt more. We are seeing incredible images around the world of the earth responding to our isolation in positive ways for Her - the skies are clear in India and you can see the foothills of the Himalayas from Punjab, the canals are clear in Venice from less water pollution, the air is cleaner from a dramatic reduction in cars on the road and the whole notion of wet markets and how and what we consume for pleasure has the globes attention.

Earth Day is a worldwide event each year on April 22nd with more than 1 billion people in 192 countries taking part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. It is a time to collectively look at our behaviours and make positive shifts that nurture and protect the earth. It is a day to consciously think about our impact on the earth and each other and question what is considered the norm. Even if it is just one thing we each do on Earth Day, it plants the seed to do these things everyday. The potential for huge positive impact is incredible.

This year, we want to share with you 10 Small Lifestyle Changes we can all make right now to help save the Earth:

1. Use A Cloth Towel Instead of a Paper Towel

Instead of buying new rolls of paper towels every week, use a cloth alternative that is forever, our Khadi Hand Towels and Washcloths are the only thing I use in my kitchen and at the dining table.

2. Go Meatless At Least Once A Week

The meat industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and excessive amounts of water usage. Eating local fruit and veg produce is a healthy option to eat the rainbow and be conscious of our impact on what we are eating.

3. Collect Rainwater

It need not be a fancy installation- use pots and buckets to collect natural rainwater or if you can install a rainwater tank to then water the plants and clean the house.

4. Unplug at Night

Unplugging all electrical appliances at night is the best way to maximise your energy efficiency.

5. Create An Urban Indoor Jungle

Bringing a little greenery into your home not only brightens your day, it purifies the air, they can help regulate the temperature through the moisture they release and also help reduce the energy required to heat and cool your home.

6. Start a Garden

From a windowsill herb garden to pots to a veggie patch, whatever your space developing your green thumb can save money, reduce food waste, is fun and rewarding.

7. Repurpose Your Jars

Empty jars and other food containers don't need to be thrown away. Use them as pencil holders, serving bowls, dessert cups, replace the plastic containers in your pantry, gifts filled with baked goodies, drinking glasses, loose change or whatever else the imagination can conjure up!

8. Start a Weekly "Zero Waste" Challenge At Home

This is a great way to prolong your honor to Mother Earth, start with a week, then extend to a month either by yourself, in a shared household or challenge other family and friends virtually and start minimising your waste production. This challenge will definitely make you rethink your choices, your lifestyle and the amount of garbage one person or one household can create.

9. Shop Green Products For Your Home

Think reusable, sustainably sourced, organic, biodegradable, fair trade, recycled and vegan materials.

10. Stop Buying Plastic Toothbrushes

Bamboo biodegradable sustainable sourced toothbrushes are beautiful to use especially knowing that they will not be around forever unlike the plastic ones.

Our Earth is a truly beautiful and sacred place, the one we all call home. May we love and nurture Her, care for and protect Her, heal and restore Her.
